Leaving the bustling city of Toronto behind, head down the 401 to Brockville. A great pit stop along the way is Belleville where they dish up incredible ice cream. Also along the way is the historic city of Kingston, known as the “Limestone City” for its grand 19th-century buildings.

Brockville is located near the Saint Lawrence River and lies at the heart of the 1000 Islands region. The region is named for the 1864 islands that straddle Canada and the United States. The best way to experience this famous and stunning area is by boat.

Brockville has a rich history – home to one of Canada’s oldest railway tunnels and Ontario’s first incorporated town. Visit various historic sites or take a walking tour of this idyllic destination.

Make your first stop the Rideau Canal. At 202 kilometres long, it connects Ottawa to Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River. In the centre of the city is Parliament Hill, an impressive and grand Victorian building. Visit the National Gallery of Canada or head to ByWard Market for specialty food like Canadian cheese and the oh-so-famous Canadian maple Syrup.

On today’s drive to Montreal, take the Quebec side of the river along highway 50. It’s known to be slightly more scenic and you’ll drive through more towns than highways. Stop in the town of Montebello and stretch your legs at the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Montebello. And, if you have extra days available to you, a night at Mont-Tremblant National Park is a beautiful stay, just under two hours from Montreal.

Arriving in Montreal, you can’t go wrong taking a food tour of Quebec’s largest city. If eating your way through Montreal’s famous smoked meat and poutine isn’t your thing, why not hike up Mont-Royal and get a bird’s eye view of the city? Old Montreal is a must-visit, be sure to take a stroll along Saint-Paul Street.

Consider spending the night at Parc National des îles-de-Boucherville, just 20 minutes north of the city centre.
