In 2017, Montreal celebrated 375 years of European settlement, the French having settled on the southern shore of Montreal Island in May 1642. Today the modern city of Montreal is the second most populous municipality in Canada.

Originally named Ville Marie or “City of Mary”, its current name comes from Mont Royal, the triple peaked hill in the heart of the city.

Gatronomy plays a large part in the lifestyle of Montrealers with great restaurants everywhere and presentation top of the line. Be sure to taste a traditional Montreal smoked meat sandwich or order some amazing poutine from one of the many stores dotted around the city.

If you’re adventurous, try improving your French here. While Montréal is the most bi-lingual city in Quebec, you’re sure to be challenged by some of the signs and most of the menus you encounter. Above all, enjoy your exploration of Montréal – it’s a world away from ordinary!
