One heck of a great birthday bash!

Celebrating Canada's 150th Birthday

As 2017 dawned across the country, Canada began a year-long sesqui-centennial celebration.  Some of the festivities have been low-key, others more prominent but none will be as spectacular as the parties happening on July 1st.

Impatient revelers are counting down the days – so where are the best places to take part in these historic events?

"Impatient revelers are counting down the days – so where are the best places to take part in these historic events? "

Our first pick is Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Why?  This small city of less than 50,000 people is the birthplace of Confederation and always celebrates Canada Day in style!  This year will be no exception and joining in the fun will be easy.  Charlottetown will play host to some of the tall ships participating in the Rendezvous 2017 Regatta – a trans-Atlantic tall ship race covering 7,000 nautical miles over five months.  Visitors will have the opportunity to board the ships which will be docked in the harbour from June 30 to July 2.

Prince Edward Island’s musical talent will be showcased in a ten-hour concert event which will showcase all musical genres.   It’ll be hard to miss the roaring 21-gun salute or the giant birthday cake!

A massive fireworks display from the shores of Victoria Park will top off the day  - bring your own chairs and blankets and enjoy one of the largest fireworks displays in Canada.

As well as hosting a day full of family-friendly activities, Major’s Hill Park will provide one of the best viewing spots for the President’s Choice Canada Day Fireworks.

Second pick is in the nation’s capital itself - Ottawa.  Nowhere in Canada will the party be bigger!

The three official sites at Parliament Hill, Major’s Hill Park and the Canadian Museum of History will be buzzing with excitement all day long.

Parliament Hill entertainment will include a 21-gun salute, an air show with the snowbirds and vintage planes, the Canada 150th sharing dance and an evening show featuring Cirque du Soleil, and other great Canadian artists.

The biggest fireworks display will take place on Parliament Hill

So, you’re not planning to be in Eastern or Central Canada for Canada Day – no drama!  There’s plenty on offer in the Western provinces.

In Calgary you have the opportunity to become part of the Enmax Living Flag with 1500 Canada Day T-shirts being given away.  At Fort Calgary, there’s a chance to dress-up like a Mountie, a free pancake breakfast, live music, food trucks and, of course, the obligatory massive Fireworks Display. Heritage Park has special programming including a special exhibit "Journey of a Lifetime" sharing the stories of the people, places and journey involved in the largest wave of immigration in Canadian history.

Calgary Peace Bridge

Vancouver’s Canada Day celebrations will be second to only Ottawa.  Some of the best places to be in Vancouver on Canada Day include Canada Place, Granville Island, Steveston Village and North Vancouver’s Waterfront Park.  With family-friendly activities taking place by the waterfront all day, Canada Place might be my pick of the places to be.   Fireworks blast off the end of the day on July 1st but that’s not the end of the celebrations – come back for more on July 2nd with the focal point being the Canada Day Parade.

 Family watching fireworks

It’s something to tell your kids and grand kids about in the future – I was there when Canada turned 150!

Happy Birthday Canada!
