For many, Sudbury might not come to mind as a vacation destination - a sprawling city bypassed by the Trans Canada Highway as you drive from North Bay to Sault Ste Marie.

But Sudbury will surprise. Surprise you by its history, surprise you by its vibrancy, surprise you with its outdoor lifestyle and welcome you with an open heart. Its location along a main transportation corridor makes it an ideal place to include in an RV road trip, with many campgrounds located inside city boundaries.

Nickel was discovered here in the late 1800s when the Canadian Pacific Railway began construction of the railway. This brought the first waves of European settlers to the area and a mining boom began. Today this mining heritage is celebrated at Dynamic Earth, where visitors can walk in the footsteps of Sudbury's miners on an underground tour. This is also home to the Big Nickel, a 30 foot replica of a 1951 Canadian nickel symbolizing the wealth that Sudbury has contributed to the Canadian economy. It's the largest coin in the world and worthy of a photograph.

The centre also includes an IMAX theatre, a planetarium and children's educational play areas.

Outdoor recreation is big in Sudbury. With a geographic area of 3627 kilometres, it is home to 330 lakes, more than any other municipality in Canada. Sudbury boasts the largest city-contained lake in the world in Lake Wanapitei. These lakes provide opportunities for world-class fishing and water sports of every kind. Waterway Route
This RV route runs eastward on Hwy #7 from Port Severn on Georgian Bay, through cottage country to Ottawa, down the Ottawa River Valley, back Hwy #2 along the north shore of Lake Ontario to the intersection with Hwy #400 north of Toronto. There are many deviations and side trips to campgrounds and points of interest along the way.
Enough to keep the family occupied for a couple of days on our vacation. The kids enjoyed Science North and we all thought the mine tour at Dynamic Earth was cool.

Lots of cities boast a BIG something - Sudbury is no different. The Big Nickel is a great place to have a photo taken but the real attraction is at Dynamic Earth. Definitely worth the visit.
