Inuvik
Nestled in the land of the Midnight Sun and gateway to the Beaufort-Delta, Inuvik is where adventure both begins and ends.
While there are regular flights into and out of Inuvik, much of the adventure is in the getting there and there's no better way to do this than by travelling the iconic Dempster Highway in an RV. Inuvik marks both the beginning and ending of this scenic byway and the beginning of the road to the Arctic ocean community of Tuktoyaktuk.
Inuvik itself though, has so much to offer the visitor. Free things to do include playing a round of golf at Roads End, the Western Arctic Visitor Centre, hiking and biking on the Trans Canada Trail, the library, the Igloo Church and the National and Territorial Parks.
Inuvik (place of people) is the homeland of the Inuvialuit and Gwich'in peoples as well as the residence for a wide variety of other people and cultures.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated in June with traditional drumming, dancing and foods. Summer brings an influx of visitors, eager to experience the excitement of the Midnight Sun. On the weekend closest to the Summer solstice, the town hosts a Midnight Sun Fun Run starting at midnight. Runners from around the world make their way north to participate in this unique event.
Canoeing, fishing, cycling and hiking are also popular recreational choices as the 24 hour sun energizes the town.
A Northern Town Warm at Heart
There's a true sense of community in Inuvik, where all are made to feel welcome.
Destination Indigenous
Inuvik is just one of many Northwest Territory towns celebrating their culture throughout the year. Heritage, history, food, art and traditions are part of these unique and lively festivities.
