Taking its name from the body of water flowing through the northern edge of the town, Campbell River has long been touted as the Salmon Capital of the World.

Sports fishermen began travelling to the area as early as the 1880s and today avid fishermen still flock here in pursuit of the many salmon species populating the waters, the most sought-after being Chinook.

Lying at the southern end of Discovery Passage, Campbell River marks the boundary between the developed south and the wild north. The city serves as the eastern gateway to Strathcona Provincial Park, approx 60 minutes to the west. Here the Butte Lake Campground offers 86 vehicle accessible sites for RV camping in a tranquil setting.
