A Season of Giants
Tofino's whale watching season spans from March through October, aligning with the migratory patterns of several whale species. During this period, over 18,000 grey whales travel up from the breeding lagoons of Baja California to feeding grounds in cold waters passing close to Tofino's shores. As well, over 6,000 humpback whales migrate up from the warm waters of Hawaii as part of their long pilgrimage. Transient orcas are seen hunting mammals such as porpoise and seals. The likelihood of seeing whales is extremely high on tour – so much so that every whale watching tour has a whale sighting guarantee.
Also not to be missed are the other wildlife encountered during a whale watching tour. Your “aquatic safari” will likely include sightings of sea lions, sea otters, seals, porpoise, bald eagles, tufted puffins and more. The circle of life all co-existing in one balanced eco-system.

Tips for a Memorable Experience
- Dress Appropriately: The weather can be unpredictable. Wear weather appropriate layers and bring waterproof gear to stay comfortable during the tour.
- Bring Binoculars and a Camera: While whales can be massive, other wildlife might be at a distance. Binoculars enhance viewing, and a camera captures those unforgettable moments. If you don’t have binoculars, rental pairs are available at check-in.
- Book in Advance: Tours can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Reserving your spot ahead of time ensures you don't miss out.
- Respect Wildlife: Always follow the guidelines provided by your tour operator to minimize disturbance to the animals and their habitat.
